The bell rang for lunch and everyone rushed out to the playground, everyone to their usual positions; on the silver seats to eat lunch or on the play equipment. A large group of year six’s began their weekly meeting under the big tree.
“It’s time we made a stand”, started Jocie. “The schools out of control, no one treats us with proper respect.”
“Yeah you’re right, we’re year six’s, they should look up at us.” one of the boys said. Murmurs of agreement passed around.
“But how?” said one of them loudly, who was echoed by others.
“Look, everyone,” Jocie twirled her long blond hair. “I have a plan. We’re going to rule the school, literally. We will elect a king and queen and make laws for the rest of the school.
After much agreement they voted and Jake and Jocie were elected King and Queen, the news was sent around the playground and by the end of lunch, everyone knew and was growing exited.
The next day rules like, address the king and queen with their proper titles and, follow the year six’s instructions, were put up on a pole near the silver seats. It wasn’t long before someone forgot a rule and police and judges were quickly appointed.
This went on for a week with new rules being put in place everyday. They decided that under the tree was not a good enough place for a palace, so they moved to the play equipment, ordering everyone to move. This was met by many annoyed looks and some protests but all were eventually moved away for the royal party.
The king and queen and the other year six’s were starting to really like this new appointed power, and started to bring in rules like; always make way for any year six’s and, gain permission from the rulers to use the play equipment.
Now this angered more than a few people and some expressed their point of view. One even complained to the queen Jocie, who quickly sent him running round the oval three times for treason. That was the last straw for some and, in secret; they made plans to overthrow the school rulers.
The next day a procession of more than two hundred children from years 2 to 5 marched up to the play equipment with signs and banners of protest. Their leader, a tall year 5 girl quietened the angry mob and shouted to the now slightly nervous year six’s.
“we’ve all had enough with you and your leadership, so step down and give us our playground back!
The crowd erupted in agreement.
“Why should we, we’re year six’s, we’re older, and smarter. We are your superiors, we aren’t going to step down to you lot, yelled Jake from atop the equipment.
The same year 5 girl shouted, “get ‘em!” and the whole two hundred of them made for the equipment with no mercy in mind.
The realisation of their few numbers against the large, and very angry mob dawned on them and they made a move to run when the playground teacher boomed, “Quiet!”
Everyone froze.
“What is going on here?” shouted Mr. Manglo.
The year fives explained what had been happening.
“You should all be ashamed of yourselves, but I’ll see you, year six, in detention tomorrow, lunchtime. Hi fives and cheers went around when he left, except for year six, who went sulkily back to their tree.
